How to get cited by ChatGPT
When someone asks ChatGPT “what's the best tool for X” and your brand isn't in the answer, you didn't lose a ranking - you were never in the race. Here is how to become a source AI assistants actually cite, based on the daily citation data in the GEOrca Index.
There are three different wins, and each needs different work:
Mentioned
The answer names your brand - driven mostly by how often the wider web associates your brand with the category.
Cited
The answer links or references your page as a source - driven by having liftable, self-contained answers on crawlable pages.
Recommended first
You're the default answer - driven by both, sustained over time.
ChatGPT's browsing mode, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity cite live sources; API-tier and offline models mostly mention brands from training data. You want both channels.
From the GEOrca Index - 1,791 citations across 7 industries, July 2026 snapshot:
- UGC dominates. YouTube or Reddit is the #1 cited source in all 7 categories we track. No presence in community threads and video = invisible to the layer AI trusts most.
- The long tail is open. 41.6% of cited domains were cited exactly once - you don't need DR90 to appear, you need the right page.
- Wikipedia barely matters for buying questions. Don't burn months chasing a Wikipedia page for commercial visibility.
Let AI crawlers in - 5 minutes, most-skipped step
Check robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and PerplexityBot blocks - Cloudflare's “block AI bots” setting silently adds them. If crawlers can't fetch you, nothing else works. Run the free check →
Publish answer-shaped pages
For each buying question, one page that answers it in the first paragraph - direct claim, number, date. Comparison pages (“Best X in 2026: A vs B”) get lifted far more than product pages, because the question is comparative.
Make claims citable
AI engines lift self-contained sentences: one fact + one number + one source. Add FAQ blocks with real answers and FAQPage JSON-LD (free generator), plus an llms.txt map (generator).
Earn UGC presence
The uncomfortable one: answer relevant Reddit threads honestly, get reviewed on YouTube, land in “best X” roundups. The data says this outweighs anything on your own site - one genuinely useful Reddit answer beats ten blog posts.
Measure per engine, weekly
Being cited by Perplexity says nothing about Gemini or Doubao - our data shows almost no overlap in cited domains between engines. Track your buying questions across engines weekly and fix per-engine gaps.
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
On-page fixes can show up in browsing-mode answers within weeks. Training-data mentions take months and follow web-wide association between your brand and the category.
Do I need backlinks to get cited by AI?
Authority helps, but citation selection favors answer fit more than classic SEO does. In GEOrca Index data, 41.6% of cited domains were cited exactly once - perfectly-shaped pages on small sites regularly beat generic pages on big ones.
Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?
No engine sells citations. The closest legitimate shortcut is genuine UGC presence (Reddit, YouTube, reviews) plus answer-shaped content on a crawlable site.
Why am I mentioned by some AI engines but not others?
Each engine has its own retrieval stack and taste - GEOrca Index data shows very little overlap in cited domains between engines. Visibility must be measured and fixed per engine.
