What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your website and content so that AI answer engines — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Chinese engines such as Doubao, Ernie, Kimi and Qwen — mention, cite, and recommend your brand when people ask questions. Where SEO competes for ranked links, GEO competes for being the source named inside the AI's answer.

Why GEO matters now

Search behavior is shifting from typing keywords to asking AI assistants full questions and accepting a synthesized answer. In that world, the winner is not the page ranked #1 — it is the brand the model decides to name. Peer-reviewed research (Aggarwal et al., “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” KDD 2024) found that GEO methods can raise a source's visibility in generative-engine answers by up to 40%.

GEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

SEO optimizes for search-engine result pages — rankings, clicks, keywords. GEO optimizes for AI-generated answers — whether the model names your brand, how accurately it describes you, and whether it cites your pages. They share a foundation (clean, structured, authoritative content helps both), but GEO adds new signals:

How do AI engines decide what to cite?

AI answer engines favor content that is (1) fetchable and parseable — they must be allowed to crawl it and read clean semantic HTML; (2) directly answers the question in quotable, self-contained sentences; (3) backed by provenance — outbound citations, named sources, concrete numbers and recency signals; and (4) frequently referenced elsewhere — brands mentioned consistently across the web are the ones models have learned to trust. The last point is why GEO leadership is earned largely off your own site, through consistent mentions, reviews and listicles.

How to do GEO, step by step

  1. 1. Fix the technical floor. Make sure AI crawlers are allowed (robots.txt), you have a sitemap, valid structured data, canonical tags and fast pages.
  2. 2. Establish your entity. State plainly what you are, and use the same canonical description everywhere (site, social profiles, directories) so the model forms one clear picture.
  3. 3. Write citable cornerstone content. Answer the high-intent questions your customers ask AI, with data, sources and FAQ structure.
  4. 4. Earn off-site mentions. Get into directories, reviews and “best tools” lists; the more the web references you, the more AI engines will.
  5. 5. Measure and iterate. Track your mention rate and citations across engines, fix the weak spots, and re-measure.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO the same as AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

They overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. Both aim to make your content the answer an AI gives. "GEO" emphasizes generative AI engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity); "AEO" is sometimes used more broadly for any answer surface, including featured snippets. In practice the optimization work is the same: clear, citable, well-structured, authoritative content.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO complements SEO. Strong technical and on-page SEO (crawlability, structured data, fast pages) is a prerequisite — an AI engine can only cite what it can fetch and parse. GEO adds entity clarity, citable claims, and answer-friendly structure on top.

How long does GEO take to work?

On-page optimization takes days. Getting indexed and earning first citations typically takes 1–3 months. Being consistently mentioned for competitive category questions usually takes 6–12 months of sustained content and off-site mentions.

How do I measure GEO?

Track mention rate (how often AI engines name your brand), first-position rate (how often you are named first), and which sources the engines cite about you. GEOrca measures all three across English and Chinese AI engines.

GEOrca is a Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) software platform. It scores your pages for AI search, tracks your brand's visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Chinese engines (Doubao, Qwen), and gives you prioritized fixes.
